Writing your first letter
Did you know: you can get matched with a random person and exchange private letters? Read more here.
Need some help writing your first letter? Here are some tips to get you started!
The introduction
Let your new friend know a bit more about you by starting with a friendly introduction. We recommend including the following information:
- A warm greeting message
- A quick about me – your name, what you do, what your interests are
Share a fun fact
Fun facts can help get the conversation going! If there’s an interesting fact about yourself or your country, include it in your letter! For example: did you know that in Singapore, chewing gums are banned and not for sale?
And once you’ve gotten your first reply and have known a little bit more about your new friend…
Start personalising your letters
Don’t send the same old letter to everyone! Personalise it to your new friend! Ask questions about your new friend, discuss about topics related to their interests and more! This gives you a higher chance of receiving a response!
Avoid being over intrusive
Do not ask about overly sensitive topics without first getting to know your new friend. Some topics are best discussed when you’re both more comfortable.
If your friend is deliberately missing out some of your questions, they may not be comfortable with answering them. Let it pass!
And that sums up our small little article on writing your first ever letter! We’ll be back again to share more tips. For now, happy writing!
