Need some help writing your first letter? Here are some tips to get you started!



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-introduction">The introduction</h2>



Let your new friend know a bit more about you by starting with a friendly introduction. We recommend including the following information:



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>A warm greeting message</li><li>A quick about me &#8211; your name, what you do, what your interests are</li></ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="share-a-fun-fact">Share a fun fact</h2>



Fun facts can help get the conversation going! If there&#8217;s an interesting fact about yourself or your country, include it in your letter! For example: did you know that in Singapore, chewing gums are banned and not for sale?







And once you&#8217;ve gotten your first reply and have known a little bit more about your new friend&#8230;







<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="start-personalising-your-letters">Start personalising your letters</h2>



Don&#8217;t send the same old letter to everyone! Personalise it to your new friend! Ask questions about your new friend, discuss about topics related to their interests and more! This gives you a higher chance of receiving a response!



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="avoid-being-over-intrusive">Avoid being over intrusive</h2>



Do not ask about overly sensitive topics without first getting to know your new friend. Some topics are best discussed when you&#8217;re both more comfortable.



If your friend is deliberately missing out some of your questions, they may not be comfortable with answering them. Let it pass!

Safety is of utmost importance to us. Read on to find out some of the measures we have in place to deal with inappropriate content.



A quick review of our Terms of Service:



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-style-plain is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">Letters should not violate the Intellectual Property rights of any other person, company or otherwise and should not cause harm, distress, bully, dox, expose, or break any local and international laws.</blockquote>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">Letters should not contain any sexually explicit content, gambling, affiliate marketing, and any form of advertising.</blockquote>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="how-we-deal-with-inappropriate-content">How we deal with inappropriate content</h2>



Content that violate our Terms of Service are permanently removed from the site &#8211; whether they are posted as public letters, or private letters.



We may also take additional steps such as: terminating the account of the registered user, or impose access restrictions on the content&#8217;s origin.



If needed, the relevant authorities may be contacted.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="safeguards-in-place">Safeguards in place</h2>



We have put a few measures in place to avoid exposure to any inappropriate content:



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>All public and private letters are screened during posting and flagged if they are suspected to have violated our Terms of Service. These posts will not be publicly visible on our website, unless cleared manually by the moderation team</li><li>A &#8216;Report&#8217; button can also be found near every letter (this applies to both public and private letters). Placement of the report button may differ slightly on different pages</li><li>Upon receipt of a report, the moderation team will review and take appropriate action</li></ul>

Matching

Writing public letters is a great way to let out some steam, but if you&#8217;re looking to make a new friend, check out our brand new matching mode!



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="how-it-works">How it works</h2>



First things first: matching is only available to registered members, so make sure you sign in with your email or Google account &#8211; it takes less than a minute!



Next, head to your &#8216;<a href="https://indirectletters.com/mailbox">Mailbox</a>&#8216;. This is where your matches will appear, together with all other public letters written to your registered sender name.

Click on the &#8216;Write to a Random Stranger&#8216; button to head to the matching page.



You&#8217;ll notice that at this point, the identity of your match is nowhere to be found. You&#8217;ll only know their identity after you send your first letter. We recommend starting with an intro, and a nice hello!

You should now see basic information about your match together with all private letters. Letters sent here will be between the both of you and not listed on the homepage.



You&#8217;ll also be notified by email whenever you receive a new letter from your match.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="but-i-can-t-keep-up-with-all-the-letters">But I can&#8217;t keep up with all the letters!</h2>



No problem! You&#8217;ll see a &#8216;I need a break&#8217; button at the top of the matching page. Pressing the button adds a little message telling your match that you&#8217;re on a break and will let them know when you&#8217;re back.
